Keeping a copy of the data at a different location reduces the risk that a single event compromises both the primary infrastructure and the resources needed for recovery.

Synchronisation methods and update frequency are defined according to business-continuity objectives.

Offline Backup

A permanently connected copy can be affected by the same events that impact the primary system.

Offline or otherwise unreachable copies add another layer of protection against errors, accidental deletion and cyberattacks.

Versioning

Keeping multiple versions of the same data makes it possible to recover files that were changed or deleted accidentally and to return to an earlier point when needed.

Automation

Automated copies reduce dependence on manual operations. Frequency, execution methods and retention criteria are configured around operational requirements.

Backup verification

The existence of a backup does not automatically guarantee that it can be used.

Periodic checks and recovery tests help identify anomalies before data recovery becomes necessary.

Business continuity

An offsite backup infrastructure can be designed to temporarily take over the role of the primary system when the main site is unavailable, keeping the data and services needed for work accessible.

When the primary system becomes available again, the data produced while the secondary system was active is resynchronised before returning to the original configuration. Continuity therefore includes both the ability to restart and the ability to return to normal without losing work performed during the emergency.

Monitoring

Errors, incomplete copies, unavailable devices or anomalies need to be detected promptly, before recovery becomes necessary.

Documentation

Configurations, recovery procedures and operational responsibilities need to be documented and kept up to date, so recovery remains understandable and repeatable over time.
